Tigers Fan - John Mayes

Central Coast Wellbeing Officers Lance Henry, Les Pearce and Dennis Tomsett recently visited Gosford Hospital in order to brighten the day of Men of League Foundation member John Mayes, who is currently undergoing treatment for brain cancer.

Smiling from ear to ear from the moment Lance, Les and Dennis arrived, John regaled with stories of his youth when he played at A-Grade level for the Leichhardt Wanderers as a crafty hooker or powerful second rower, while also impressing the Wellbeing Officers with his knowledge of his beloved Tigers.

Sporting a Tigers souvenir above his bed in testament to his staunch support, John recalled one of the most memorable victories he has seen – Balmain’s infamous 11-2 grand final victory over South Sydney in 1969 – and named each of the players from that side, including the coach.

John was incredibly appreciative of the visit and acknowledged the great work of the Foundation. As a member, John is already well aware of the great support the Foundation provides to the men, women and children of the rugby league community. The Wellbeing Officers presented him with a Men of League Foundation cap at the end of their visit.
